So Brooke Smith who played Dr. Erica Hahn was abruptly dropped from Grey's Anatomy a couple weeks ago. Smith declared openly that she believed that it was due to the open and graphic lesbian relationship that the character was involved with.
There is a lot of buzz that the network is trying to "de-gay" the show, other buzz is stating that the incoming character of Sadie played by Melissa George will no longer be a bisexual. There's also some unfounded rumors that the character of Callie who was involved with Hahn is on her way out too.
As for the "degayification" of Grey's only time will tell. If Callie's portrayer Sara Ramirez does leave or Sadie is suddenly straight then the rumors are true and I am disapointed in ABC. After the whole Isaiah Washington debacle the last thing they need is to turn their back on the LGBT culture. It's also a slap in the face of openly gay cast member T.R. Knight.
However as far as the Hahn/Callie storyline went I didn't like it. Brooke Smith is a great actress but had no chemistry with Sara Ramirez. The relationship seemed forced and only there to be shocking and provactative. The key to a great television supercouple, gay or straight is chemistry. Also a recent storyline between the two really offended me.
Callie and Hahn hook up but Callie cannot take the downtown route if you know what I mean. Rather than have Callie confess her fears to Hahn and have the two work it out by themselves she turns to a male for lessons and then practically jumps Hahn while they are still at work. It always squicks me out to see hospital shows where people who are supposed to be saving lives are nailing one another instead. And having a lesbian/bi character turn to a straight man for help was insulting to say the least.
I hope that Brooke Smith can find a show that actually utilizes her talents as opposed to using her as a ratings grab. Weeds would be wise to beg this woman to come back on a more permanant basis.
